The Chinese government ordered a probe into the stampede at the Carrefour store in which three persons were killed when the retail outlet had on Saturday launched a promotion sale of cooking oil.
Ministry of Commerce ordered police and government officials to “carry out a comprehensive investigation of retail businesses’ sales promotion. We demand that commercial businesses do not organize limited time sales promotions that can easily cause traffic jams, personal injury and chaos,” media reports said quoting the ministry statement.
The stampede took place in the Carrefour outlet in the south-western city of Chongging in which dozens of shoppers were also injured as they rushed to buy cooking oil at discounted price since the country had witnessed rising food prices.
