After its American debut, the supermarket chain Tesco plans to enter Indian and Russian markets in a big way.
“The move across the Atlantic was just the start of a pretty ambitious worldwide growth programme including India and Russia,” said Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive, Tesco.
“We keep looking at everywhere,” he said, adding that a “crossover”, where international sales overtake sales in the United Kingdom, would take place within the decade.
Tesco, the UK-based retail giant, which has opened 13 shops under the Fresh & Easy banner in the United States this month, currently makes 27 per cent of its 50 billion pounds of annual revenue from its overseas stores.
“We are on the threshold of becoming one of the few successful international retailers. There’s plenty to do,” he said.
