The Indian Council of Research in International Economic Relations (ICRIER), in a presentation of its retail report to the commerce ministry, said that intermediaries are amongst the biggest gainers of organised retail.
The study says that organised retail in India needs the help of intermediaries to run their retail operations. “Retailers do realise that in a country like India, one needs intermediaries to ease up supply-side restrictions,” the study observed.
Another interesting finding is that most unorganised retailers do not perceive big retail chains as a threat to their existence. The report says that around 40 per cent of small retailers want their children to continue in the trade.
ICRIER studied over 2,000 unorganised retailers, some 200 farmers, over 1,000 consumers, and around 100 intermediaries in 10 cities.
