Globus Wines, a part of Globus Vision Group, has taken over Haiko Supermarket’s liquor category, and has entered into an agreement with Hiranandani Constructions, a leading developer in India, to open exclusive high-end wine stores across India.
Since the liberalisation of beer and wine licenses in Maharashtra, Haiko was the first supermarket that opted to retail wines and beers.
“Association with Hiranandani Constructions is in sync with our expansion plans to set up high-end retail stores in India. We’re on track to open our 75 stores within the next couple of years,’ Karan Jain, CMD and CEO, Globus Wines, told Indiaretailing.
The company has also entered into an agreement with K Raheja Group and Oberoi Constructions to set up wine boutiques in their shopping malls across India.
“We’re opening two boutiques within the next couple of weeks, and will be stocking more than 500 types of wines from different countries including France, Australia, Italy, USA, Argentina, Spain and Chile. We are probably the first company in India to stock such an exhaustive range of wines, wherein 80 per cent are imported and 15 per cent are Indian wines, while five per cent are beers. Other products like olive oil, olives, cheese, cigarettes and cigars along with wine accessories and paintings will also be retailed through these boutiques,” said Jain.
The new boutiques will open at Infiniti Mall and Oberoi Mall in Mumbai, and will be spread across 600 square feet and 300 square feet, respectively.
The company is also taking up day licenses to carry out tasting/sampling sessions for its customers.
With a Globus Wines store already operational at Star Bazaar in Mumbai, Globus Wines is the first wine manufacturing company in India to enter the wine and beer retailing business.
In an effort to promote wine and beer sales, Government of Maharashtra, in 2006, had introduced new licenses called FL BR II, which allows open sale of wine and beer.
Globus Wines entered the wine business with the launch of Miazma wine around 14 months ago.
