The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has announced that it will soon start education programmes for traditional retailers, and that it is already in the process of hiring faculty.
Speaking to Indiaretailing, Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general, CAIT, said, “In the backdrop of corporate retailers eyeing to capture and monopolise the vast retail trade, CAIT seeks to promote and grow the retail sector in India by providing modern business skills to traditional retailers, to enable them to make good use of the human capital that already exists in the trading sector.”
Termed as ‘the retail school project of CAIT’, the programme will mark its beginning from New Delhi and Nagpur very shortly, said Khandelwal. Later, it will spread to other states of the country. CAIT officials said that the project is focused to cover not only the metros, but also the smaller cities and towns. Classes will be held in the various offices of CAIT and its associates, said Khandelwal.
He said that keeping in consideration the changes being brought by the government in various laws and acts governing trade as also the changes in the global business scenario, the self-organised trading community, or the so-called ‘unorganised sector’, needs to be given adequate education. He said that this is needed to update the experienced retailers to transform their existing business into modern format of retailing.
