Sensex goes negative after volatile Tuesday

Market has a modest gap-down opening despite negative global cues today. The 30-share index, BSE Sensex started the day at 9498, down 148 points from its previous close, and Nifty kicked off at 2893, down 40 points. Further, market breadth remained negative in the early session of trade with advances at 55 against declines of 365 on the NSE.

On Tuesday, Sensex ended the volatile session on a positive note led by realty, consumer goods and banking stocks while metal stocks edged lower. Sensex ended the day with a gain of 63.58 points, or 0.66 per cent at 9,647.47 after touching a high of 9,724.87 and a low of 9,510.50. The broad-based NSE Nifty climbed 14.60 points, or 0.50 per cent at 2,934.50 after hitting a high of 2,957.40 and a low of 2,891.75.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index rose 0.76 per cent and 0.29 per cent respectively. Among the sectoral indices, BSE Realty gained the most. The counter soared 6.58 per cent followed by Consumer goods rose 3.14 per cent and Bankex moved up 1.16 per cent, while Metal dropped 1.43 per cent.

Major gainers in the 30-share index on Tuesday were DLF, Reliance Capital, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Reliance Communications. On the other hand, Reliance Energy, Hindalco Industries, Tata Motors, NTPC, ITC, and Tata Steel were the major losers in the Sensex.
