Chinese telecom gear maker ZTE Corporation has entered the Indian mobile handset market with the launch of five GSM devices priced between Rs 1,100 and Rs 3,800. ZTE until now was selling network equipment in the Indian market and bundled handsets through operators. The move is expected to give some competition to the dominant European players in the handset segment.
ZTE said that the entry into Indian market will improve its global handset market share from the current 16 per cent to 20 per cent. The company has appointed Overseas Mobiles Pvt Ltd as its national distributor for mobile and data devices. ZTE is targeting to have a network of 100,000 retail outlets in India by this year-end.”India is a key focus market for us and we are delighted to launch ZTE branded handsets in the retail ,” said Dr. DK Ghosh, Chairman and Managing Director.
