French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier will launch a fashion line for Target in March 2010, the third designer to do so under the retailer’s Designer Collaboration series after Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui. The retailer’s most recent association with a haute couture designer was with Issac Mizrahi, who left the alliance to take on a new revamp assignment with Liz Claiborne at the beginning of 2009.
The Target clothing line designed by Gaultier will start on March 7 and be available through April 11 in Target stores and on Target’s Web site.
“Jean Paul Gaultier for Target pays tribute to the American woman, celebrating the forces of style both past and present in American pop culture,” the retailer said.
Gaultier, who is equally popular and controversial for his usage of unconventional models and risque designs (including the iconic cone-bra for Madonna), has designed the wardrobe of many motion pictures, including Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, Pedro Almodóvar’s Kika, and Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, as well as the newly relaunched clothing line for the French luxury brand Hermès.
