Tesco is closing its Middleton distribution centre and relocating the work to Widnes in a move which will affect 620 staff.
The supermarket chain said they would be offered work at other sites or, in the case of drivers, transferred to Eddie Stobart, which is taking over a distribution contract from Wincanton.
Tesco said the 20-year-old Middleton site was too small and had no room for expansion.
The 298,820 sq ft warehouse on the Stakehill Industrial Estate, which handles chilled and cold storage distribution for the North West, is due to close in July.
In 2007, the freehold was bought for £28m by the Starion Group from PRUPIM. It was let to Tesco Distribution Ltd on a 35-year lease which has 14 years to run.
