FDA, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, has issued warning notifications to three popular mouthwash manufacturers – Johnson & Johnson, Walgreens and CVS Caremark Corporation – for publicising unsubstantiated claims on their products. The companies have been strictly directed to remove misleading statements from the branding of Listerine Total Care Anti-Cavity Mouthwash (J&J), CVS Complete Care Anti-Cavity Mouthwash and Walgreen Mouth Rinse Full Action. According to FDA, the companies use sodium fluoride as an ingredient known to prevent cavities. However, the specific ingredient does not help in the removal of plaque or gum disease.
