Few designers show a collection that resembles anything they sell and Manish Arora exemplifies that proposition. The maverick designer showed the most exuberant collection so far at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010 being held in Mumbai. It was loud, chaotic and at times even psychotic. There were colours, glitz, led lights, over-the-top wigs, sequinned helmets and more. The designer is best known for creating intense drama on the ramp. And that’s what he did with red, green and yellow wigs, and brightly-painted lips. He`s not called the John Galliano of India for nothing.
Presented by Philips, the show opened with a sleek laser show and Philips AV. Arora`s short dresses and shrugs had a futuristic style with a robotic feel. Showcasing in Mumbai after a long gap, Manish unleashed a line of dresses, rouched blouses, structured jackets, colourful cowl pants, bias-cut skirts and sexy plunging necklines with rigid extended shoulders and wide sleeves. There was detailing galore with appliqué flowers, sequins, metallic blouses, 3D embroidery and more.
It was not only the clothes that screamed out but the unique wigs too made a noise. Created in neon colours these wigs were shaped like bobs, skull caps and Star Trek like helmets to give a unique dimension to the garments. Colourful wool, too, made for interesting wigs especially when paired with neon cigarette pants and dolman sleeve tops. The show ended with models strutting helicopter-like head gear, glittery minia and gold jumpsuits. Not a show that will be forgotten too soon.
