Victorian menswear by K.Jo & Varun Bahl

Must Read

A Victorian building facade was the backdrop which flowed into a black and white checkered ramp flanked by rows of street lamp posts for the menswear show titled “The Victorian Victor” by film director Karan Johar and designer Varun Bahl.

The opening was reserved for actor Hritikh Roshan in a military style black velvet asymmetric closure long double-breasted coat with a white shirt, long cuffs, pocket square and gleaming buttons.

Giving a flamboyant Victorian twist to modern menswear, the look of the collection was opulent with rich velvet as the favoured fabric along with lightweight wool, blends and cotton. Working around colours like black, royal gold, mud brown, burgundy, grey and a bit of navy there were houndstooth checks, dark charcoal and brown checks, as well as classic tweeds in shades of black and white.

In the western segment there were one-button jackets, stand-up collar shirts, three-piece suits, choir-boy collar shirts, wide collars worn with bow ties, very lean trousers and breeches, one-button trench coat jackets, cape style and coachman inspired coats, velvet shawl collar jackets and doorman style long coats with epaulets and velvet collars.

The designer duo did not ignore the ethnic dresser. So there was the `Raj` look with sherwanis, bandgalas and classic jackets with antique embroidery on sleeves, shoulders, sleeve edges, collars or all over the garment. Accessories were on display too, with top hats, pocket watches and classic shoes and boots to complete the look.

Two charismatic stars – Amitabh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan – dazzled as the showstoppers for the show and added to the glam quotient. Amitabh Bachchan, dressed in a black overcoat with aviators and Hrithik styled in a military jacket, came to take the final bow with the designers and to take things up a notch, Karan Johar invited Shah Rukh Khan, who was sitting in the first row, on to the ramp too. A final jig by the three stars was the perfect ending to the marriage of Bollywood and high fashion!
