Target plans to open 21 new stores in 2011, covering 13 states; including five stores in California, a fourth store in Hawaii and a SuperTarget in Minnesota.

“Target takes great pride in designing stores that meet the needs of our guests and the communities we serve,” said John Griffith, executive vice president, Target. “With the addition of an expanded fresh food assortment, our new stores will offer guests everything they need in one convenient location.”

The general merchandise stores will include an expanded fresh food assortment, providing greater convenience and value to guests. At about 135,000 square feet, the stores will offer basic fresh produce, fresh packaged meat and baked goods, and employ 100 to 250 team members.

The new SuperTarget, opening in Woodbury, Minn., will feature a full-line, full-service supermarket, including a bakery and deli and certified organic produce. At about 174,000 square feet, it will also feature all the amenities of a general merchandise store and employ 200 to 300 team members.

Target has created an image of creating strong partnerships with local organisations in all of the communities where the company does business. To maintain the image, each of the new stores will start a local grant programme, contribute to the United Way, donate food to a local Feeding America affiliate and products to the local Goodwill chapter, as well as encourage team members to volunteer their time to serve the needs of their community.

The Minneapolis-based Target Corp. also plans to remodel about 400 of its general merchandise stores across the nation throughout this year, building upon its latest strategy to bulk up on grocery offerings.
