In the past three months, Morrisons was the only big four supermarket to grow ahead of the market.
The discounters again performed strongly.
Sales at Aldi were up by 20 per cent and at Lidl by almost 16 per cent in the 12 weeks to 10 July. The two now represent 6.1 per cent of the total grocery market.
Waitrose was the next best performer, growing by 9 per cent over the same period a year ago, upping its share of the market to 4.3 per cent. The market as a whole grew by 4.6 per cent, just behind the 4.8 per cent rate of grocery inflation over the period.
Inflation has grown much faster than anticipated and, as such, is expect to reach 5 per cent and perhaps beyond in the next few months. Double-digit inflation could take place in a handful of categories.
