The fifth annual Images Shopping Centre Awards 2012 were held at Mumbai in a colourful ceremony on the evening of May 8th, felicitating outstanding achievements of the titans who have transformed India’s shopping centres in their own unique way.
Phoenix Mills, Mumbai, bagged the ‘Most Admired Shopping Centre Developer of the Year’ award while Anuj Puri, Chairman and Country Head, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) India, was declared the ‘Most Admired Shopping Centre Professional’ of the year.
Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, received the award for the ‘Most Admired Shopping Centre of the Year – Metros (North)’. Ambience Gurgaon focused on control of tenancy zoning over the past couple of years. It strived to make itself into a destination center for all in terms of entertainment, leisure and dining, and added several new elements like Golf, bowling alley, fresh breweries etc. to raise the entertainment quotient.
The largest mall in South India, Mantri Square, Bangalore bagged the award for the ‘Most Admired Shopping Centre of the Year: Metros – South’. The award for the ‘Most Admired Shopping Centre of the year: Metros – West’ went to Inorbit Mall, Malad. Launched in 2004, with a GLA of 3,09,000 sq.ft. and housing over 150 fashion brands, Inorbit Malad continues to draw average weekend footfalls of over 45,000.
Designed to boost the profile of the fast maturing and learning business in India, The Images Shopping Centre Awards acknowledges the efforts of those constantly pushing the envelope in mall marketing, customer service, and innovation.
Apart from celebrating the achievements of India’s shopping centre industry in the last fiscal, the evening also saw some wholesome entertainment. While singer Shweta Pandit enthralled the audiences with her rendition of Bollywood hits, stand-up comedian Saurabh Pant had everyone in splits.
The year 2011 was an action packed one for the Indian retail industry. Over 33 new shopping centres opened across the country, while the earlier ones continued to raise the bar to sustain their leads. The Images Shopping Centre Awards 2012, are honours not based on statistics alone; they also acknowledge the virtues of great partnerships between centre owners and tenants, mall management, mutually profitable footfall strategies and innovative mall marketing, among other things.
National retailers with widespread presence in malls across the country, along with independent analysts and IPCs who have been key observers of the developments in this industry, were invited to participate in the IMAGES SHOPPING CENTRE AWARDS 2012 decision-making process. India’s leading retailers involved their property heads, location specialists, brand managers, and entire teams in responding to questionnaires on the shopping centre industry in India.They voted and analysed centres that were present in, as well as centres they would like to be present in. Therefore, this process wasn’t a mere ranking exercise – there was a series of debates, arguments, and cross questioning involved to get to the final choices.
Following entries by shopping centres and performance analysis, a comprehensive analysis sheet reflecting the key features and strengths of all the finalists was shared with an eminent jury comprising, Amit Bagaria, Chairman, ASIPAC; Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & MD, CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd.; Anuj Puri, Chairman and Country Head, Jones Lang LaSalle; Jaideep Wahi, Director – Retail Services, India, Cushman & Wakefield; Sunil Biyani, Director, Internal Business, Future Group; and Amitabh Taneja, Chairman and Managing Director, IMAGES Group who put their votes in to zoom in on the awardees.
