Known for his comfortable and chic designs, Gautam Gupta has brought about a revolution in the Indian fashion industry by introducing prints in vibrant colours and multifaceted shapes. Salon India talks to this unconventional designer to know more about fashion, trends and his future plans.
What role does hair and make-up play in fashion industry?
Fashion is no longer just about clothes but it is also about the look one can carry off. Hair and make-up are like oxygen for fashion. One needs to make a statement by telling your prospective clients and the world, the vision you have as a designer vis-à-vis your collection and sensibilities and the way it should be worn. Fashion is impossible without the complementing hair and make-up.
How do you create a look with hair and make-up concepts?
A designer shares his thoughts with a team of stylists and hair and make-up expert’s. As per the given brief the team designs a few looks and finalised the final look depending upon the designs and the theme.
From where do you get the inspiration?
I have always loved collections and designs from Manish Arora and Roberto Cavalli. They both are experimental and always ready to raise the bar in fashion. Both the brands are great source of inspiration for me.
What is the most outrageous look you have created so far?
It was for our SS 13 show and we had used a lot of bold prints and neon colours in our collection. We used colours on hair, bold make-up and neon accessories to give it a loud look.
What are your views on Indian fashion industry?
Being a part of Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week for more than 18 months, I feel Indian fashion is going in the right direction and the future seems to be a promising. But all of us would love to have more international exposure through buyers and runways and some interesting steps are being taken.
Another element which needs more acknowledgement is from the government, as our fashion shows are more of trade shows, so evils such as entertainment tax should be removed. Also 12.5 percent VAT is too high as not all designers sell luxury.
What is your SS’14 lookbook?
One can expect a lot of sporty look in SS’14 as the FIFA world cup is there. Apart from bold print—monotone colours, edgy silhouettes will be seen. Innovations in textures such as laser cutting, colour blocking, ombre, drapes and ruching with the re-invention of old textiles will rule 2014. Classic white and blacks will be again the flavour of the season.
What are your future plans?
I am looking forward to Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week Autumn winter’ 14 as I have already started working on it. Apart from that I will be starting with my debut collection on hand-woven fabrics designed by us with the weavers from across the country.
