Gurgaon-based Zomato, one of the fastest growing start-ups in India, which stepped into the online food ordering segment a couple of months ago, has reportedly introduced online payment systems in India. Customers now will be able to pay through their credit cards, debit cards or net banking accounts while ordering from the Zomato app.
The company has reportedly partnered with PayPal to provide the service to its Indian customers.
However, all the restaurants on Zomato’s platform are not accepting online payment; only a group of select restaurants has this facility enabled. Also, the updated app will have Zomato Credits, which would store all referral credits and refunds made by the company.
Zomato is already present in 22 countries through acquisitions and India is the second territory to have the cashless payment system, after Dubai, where the company launched its services in February this year.
“We definitely plan to introduce it in India over the course of the year. Once we see how this does in Dubai however, we’ll get a better idea as to what we can expect when we roll it out on home turf,” Zomato’s co-founder and COO, Pankaj Chaddah, said during the launch of services in Dubai.
How the services work in Dubai: The user uses the Zomato app to check-in at the restaurant by selecting a pre-fed credit card, and then informs the restaurant staff that he/she would be using Zomato cashless to process the payment. Then the restaurant will automatically charge the user’s credit card through the cashless merchant app at the end of the meal.
