Enabling millions of Indian to overcome language barriers e-commerce major Snapdeal has unveiled its multilingual interface. The new interface will let millions of shoppers shop online in their preferred regional language.
To start with, Snapdeal’s user interface, on the mobile, will now be available in Hindi and Telugu language. While in time for India’s Republic Day on 26th January 2016, Snapdeal will be available in 11 different regional languages including – Telugu, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese and Punjabi, the company said in a release.
“With this, we have expanded our reach to an additional 130 million smart phone users in India, who use internet in regional languages, thus making digital commerce now accessible to all, Snapdeal said.
The platform allows users to pick the language of their choice for browsing, for payments and for order tracking. The platform is built on top of Snaplite, Snapdeal’s recently launched website for mobile browser, which company claims is 85% lighter and consumes less bandwidth.
Working on similar lines, cross-category classified platform Quikr has also announced the launch of vernacular language support for consumers accessing its platform. Quikr allows consumers to choose from seven different languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati and Marathi, to browse as well as post ads in.
“About 88% of India’s population is non-English speaking. By enabling them to communicate, create and consume content in their preferred languages, we are working towards making our platform a more inclusive online classifieds marketplace,” Anurag Saran, chief product officer, Quikr, was quoted as saying,
Snapdeal’s multilingual user interface has been developed on the basis of the feedback it received from both its buyers and sellers.
“India’s linguistic diversity is a huge opportunity to expand the market to include those users who would prefer to engage online in their native languages. This move will enable millions of new users to join the digital commerce revolution that is sweeping across India,” Rohit Bansal, Co-Founder, Snapdeal said.
To deliver a seamless shopping experience in all languages, Snapdeal developed a Grammar Engine to ensure an error free translation. The platform combines translation, trans-literation and grammar check to deliver relevant experience in each language.
