The Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited have become the pioneer in India’s food industry to start a fully automated bio-CNG generating and bottling plant. Popularly known as Amul Dairy, the brand has shifted to bio-CNG generation plant to utilize energy from its plant’s waste as part of its green initiative. The co-operative has invested Rs 1.75 crore for implementing this technology.
Before introducing the new technology, the dairy union used to burn the bio gas producing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. These gases when released in the atmosphere used to harm it.
One litre of water is used for chemical cleaning of plant and machinery for every litre of milk processed in the dairy. This water contains residual milk solids which used to emit 2,500 cubic metre of methane daily with around 60-65 per cent purity. But with the functioning of the bio-CNG generation plant, the methane content has gone up to 93 per cent.
This purified biogas is as good as CNG having more than 93 percent of methane content.
