Amid a cooling in its home market, Xiomi, Chinese smartphone maker, is ramping up its presence in the Indian market. It is planning to set up two manufacturing plants in India and it is expected that it will launch more devices by this year end.
There has been a rise in consumers buying smartphones from e-commerce websites and Xiomi claims to be a big part of it. Xiomi is expected to be at the top of the list when market share is consolidated.
Single-brand retail licence is an exciting opportunity for Chinese smartphone maker. However, it is yet not clear whether it has applied for the licence or not. Just like Apple, Xiomi will also fall in the category of top foreign brands opting for a direct presence in India.
Taking the advantage of the Union Budget recommendations, it also planning to manufacture handset peripherals and components in India itself.
In India, Xiomi will be launching Mi 5 in April and two more devices by this year end. Initially, Mi 5 will not be made in India and it will cost around Rs 20,000 – Rs 27,000. In 2016, it is also planning to enter new product categories.
In July 2014, Xiomi entered Indian market and just over a year later it also started local manufacturing. 75 per cent of the company’s phone are made at Foxconn’s Andhra Pradesh plant.
