Samir Kumar is the Vice-President of Category Management at Amazon India. He was part of the team that set up India operations of the e-commerce giant in 2013. Kumar will be moving back to its headquarters in Seattle.
He is counted among the ‘powerful trio’ at Amazon India comprising of Kumar, Amazon Country Head Amit Agarwal, and Head Sellers Business Amit Desphande.
Kumar has been driving all the brand partnerships at Amazon India and has been instrumental in striking exclusive brand launches across categories like One Plus, Xiaomi, Fitbit, Lenovo phones, Microsoft’s Xbox, Whirlpool’s Kitchen Aid brand, Philips, GOQii among others.
Having joined Amazon as a systems engineer in 1999, Kumar has held various positions within Amazon which include being the director of international expansion among other roles.

Kumar’s career began in 1995 with Illuminet Inc, where he worked as a systems analyst for nearly two years. He then moved on to DMR Fujitsu as a technical consultant in 1997, up to 1999.
Kumar joined Amazon.com in 1999 where he worked his way up the ranks. He started as a systems engineer. In 2001, he was made Manager, Systems Engineering and then in 2005, Manager Software. Two years later, he was promoted to Senior Manager, Fulfillment Center Software and another two years down the line, he was made Director of the Fulfillment Center Software department.
In 2010, his hard work and dedication got him the post of Techinical Advisor, International Retail, where he worked directly with then Senior Vice President International. His special focus was on growing the Amazon business in China.
In March 2012, Kumar was promoted to the post of Director, International Expansion. During this time, he built and lead a team of Amazonians focused on launching and growing Amazon’s business in India.
In June 2015, Kumar was made Vice President Category Management, Amazon India.

Education

Samir has done his BE in Electronics Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (1989-1993). He then pursued a Master’s degree, Electrical Engineering at the Utah State University (1993 – 1995).
