Swedish fashion retail giant, H&M, has had a fairly successful run in India since it launched its first store in Delhi last year. The business has been steady, and the merchandise affordable, and hence the expansion plans are flowing.
The fashion chain is all set to open it’s sixth store in India, in Mohali’s North Counrty Mall, on May 28 this year.
The first H&M store in Punjab’s tri-city area, H&M will be spread over 27,000 sq. ft., with dedicated sections for ladies, men, children and teenagers.

The store’s crisp and bright interiors will be the perfect backdrop to this selection, offering the hottest trends as well as timeless classics at the best prices for the fashion-conscious customer.
North Country Mall also houses other brands such as Zara, Marks and Spencer’s, Decathlon and West-side.
“We are excited to arrive in Mohali at North Country Mall, which has easy accessibility within the Tricity and other parts of Punjab,” Country Manager at Hennes and Mauritz Retail Pvt. Ltd, Janne Einola was quoted by The Times of India as saying. “H&M sees great potential for further expansion both in our existing regions as well as new regions within India,” he added.
Those joining the queue on the opening day can expect great surprises along with foot tapping music and H&M goodies. The first three fashionistas will be rewarded with H&M gift cards worth Rs 7000, Rs 5000 and Rs 3000 respectively, while the next 200 fashion lovers in queue will receive limited edition H&M goodie bags and gift cards worth Rs 500.
According to a report in Livemint: A vast diaspora in Punjab has helped make shoppers more brand and fashion conscious than those in other markets up north. Shoppers in Punjab are also wealthy and discerning. Chandigarh services shoppers through Elante mall, with brands such as Steve Madden, Zara, Calvin Klein and Brooks Brothers, among others.
Finding shoppers in the market thus won’t be a problem, but scale will.
H&M will make an estimated investment of Rs.700 crore in India to open 50 stores. It launched its first store in Delhi in October last year and currently operates two stores in Delhi.
