L’Oréal -UNESCO award for science

Must Read

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science fellowship 2010 has been awarded to Dr Antima Gupta, a young researcher and PhD student at the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow. She is the second recipient of this award, and has been recognized for her research to make drug screening program easy and convenient for testing new drug molecules to combat drug-resistant tuberculosis.

This program provides financial assistance to young women wanting to pursue scientific careers.

“I know first-hand the challenges that women can face in pursuing a career in science – many times they encounter social pressures to avoid higher education and focus more on family-oriented tasks from a young age,” says Dr Gupta. Every year over 1.7 million people die of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide, with more than 20 percent of the world’s cases only in India.

Created in 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership is the initiative to encourage talent each year. This initiative has been extended further at a national level in over 20 countries across the world.
