The Union government has received proposals from the state governments of Bihar and Kerala for setting up National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) during the Eleventh Plan period.
However, these would be subject to the conditions that the state government is willing to provide land and financial support and fulfil feasibility conditions, Indian parliament was informed Monday.
The decision for setting up these institutes is taken by the NIFT Board, a statutory body under ministry of textiles, as and when the proposals from state governments are received, EVKS Elangovan, minister of state for textiles, said.
However, he said no formal proposal has been received from the government of Orissa.
The minister said the proposal for setting up of NIFT in Bihar has been approved by NIFT Board and the matter has been taken up with the state government for allotment of land and funding support. The proposal for setting up of a NIFT centre in Kannur, Kerala, will be placed for consideration of the board at its next meeting.
