Multi-brand mobile phone retailer UniverCell is planning to launch its own brand of mobile phones. “The company would launch its own brand in a year and target the below Rs 3,000 segment as these account for over 60 per cent of the total mobile market,” said Satish Babu, managing director, UniverCell.
The company is planning to become a mobile virtual network operator, which will provide mobile phone services but will not have its own licenced frequency allocation of the radio spectrum, added Babu. Initially the Chennai-based company would import handsets from China and would set up a manufacturing unit in the country at later stage.
Meanwhile, in its aim to increase its market share in retail mobile, the company has also set up a turnover target of Rs 5 billion for the current fiscal.
