Carrefour , the world’s second-biggest retailer, has signed online specialist Pixmania to help it catch up with rivals in the fast-growing market for selling non-food goods over the internet.
The two firms said on Thursday that Pixmania, part of British electrical goods group Dixons Retail , would develop a website to sell a range of Carrefour’s non-food products in a number of European countries.
Carrefour customers will also have access to an extended range of products through Pixmania, which will also support a marketplace platform selling additional goods from third-party merchants.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Carrefour has been criticised by some analysts for lagging competitors in adapting to the internet. French rival Casino , for example, has more than a million registered users for its non-food internet business Cdiscount.
Carrefour and Casino are also at loggerheads over control of Brazil’s biggest retailer Grupo Pao de Acucar.
