UK-based Sainsbury’s plans to open an Argos branch inside every one of its supermarkets.
Sainsbury’s boss Mike Coupe said on Wednesday that there will be an Argos mini-store or a click-and-collect point in every supermarket over the next few years.
The move is part of integration plans between the two retailers following the grocery giant’s £1.4 billion takeover of Argos owner the Home Retail Group.
“Over time, we envisage that there won’t be a single Sainsbury’s shop, with the exception of some very small convenience shops, where you won’t either be able to see an Argos concession or be able to click and collect and pick up your item,” Mike Coupe was quoted as saying by the UK press.
Sainsbury’s is now the UK’s biggest retailer of non-food, as well as the second biggest grocer, with 195,000 employees and more than 2,000 outlets including supermarkets, Argos stores, convenience stores and three flagship Habitat outlets – which it bought from Homebase after that group was bought over by Australian company, Wesfarmers.
Sainsbury’s is hoping that this move will create 1,000 jobs over the next few years.
